Amigoe: ‘Discussion Isla surrounded by fear’

THE HAGUE — The discussion on the future of the Isla-refinery is surrounded by fear for incomprehension with the employees, for new balances of power and for a society without the oil refinery. However, everyone knows that the refinery doesn’t have a future, according to the shared conclusion during the first meeting of the Vereniging Antilliaans Netwerk (VAN) this year. Amigoe: ‘Fire at Isla dump probably started by copper thieves’

WILLEMSTAD — The exceptionally high peak last Friday of sulfur dioxide values – 1650 micrograms – on the website luchtmetingencuracao.org, is being connected with a fire on the property between the Isla-refinery and Nijlweg, which serves as dump. One suspects that unauthorized persons attempted to steal copper by melting the plastic of the cables, which caused the fire. As a result the sulfur buried on the property and the barrels of sulfur started smoldering. The Isla-refinery emphasized that nobody was … Lees meer

1000 Awesome Things About Curaçao: ‘SMOC’s Passionate Pursuit: Cleaner Air for Curaçao’

In Willemstad, Dutch Colonial façades in cheerful hues of yellow, blue, pink, green worthy of UNESCO World Heritage are set against a background reminiscent of Tolkien’s Mordor. This unmistakable blot in the heart of Curaçao’s otherwise picturesque landscape is a huge oil refinery surrounded by a halo of awful-smelling sulfur dioxide-filled air and asbestos-filled asphalt lake. A remnant of the once thriving Royal Dutch Shell Refinery – founded in 1915 – also happens to be the very reason Curaçao ranks … Lees meer

To combat climate change. What is ‘Dutch’?

In 1993, The Netherlands ratified the Climate Change Convention and, in 2002, the Kyoto Protocol. This information is obtained from the United Nations (UN). In the 1990s, the Netherlands accepted the Montreal Protocol and the subsequent amendments. For clearness sake, to accept or to ratify a protocol or convention is something different. Nevertheless, ratification and acceptance are not a free-ride for a country, but an obligation to operate in accordance with the concerned protocol/convention. But what is the Netherlands? According … Lees meer

Caribbean Footprint: ‘The black irony of it all’

On August 11th I acted as a nature guide during the monthly excursions we organize together with Grupo Bina. This time we took the participants on an end-of-the-day tour along the coast of the salt pans of Jan Kok, a beautiful area with lots of wildlife. During the trip, I happened to mention the current gas and oil exploration hype our government created (including the press statement of one of the ministers that we all should invest in Arabic headgear), … Lees meer
